Eyelid Coloboma

Congenital malformation of the upper eyelids, here also with complications of the cornea.

The reason is the building of a deficient fissure during embryo-genesis. That is why a complete closure of the fissure of the eye does not happen.

Only one eyelid or all eyelids or even other parts of the eye can be affected.

In dependence of the size of the fissure, there are complications by dehydration of the surface of the eye. If therapy is too late, this can also lead to loss of vision.

The right point for a surgical reconstruction is dependent of the size of the coloboma and the impending secondary complications.

This surgery ought to be performed by oculoplastic ophthalmologists, if necessary even as a neonate.
