Ichthyosis

The eyelids cannot close completely any more.

Ichthyosis (Alligator-Skin Disease)

A systemic thickening of the upper skin layer with loss of elasticity can lead to problems of the eyelid-closure. There is a problem of the regeneration of the skin; Desquamation defect. (Alligator-Skin Disease)

Time-dependent complications of worsening of the view by increased dehydration of the eye surface can occur.

Concerning the systemic therapy, up to now there are only symptomatic approaches which support the regeneration-cycle of the skin or heal epiphenomenons as infections. At this, an intensive treatment of the surface is applied.

Further there is very intensive research for a gene-therapeutic approach.

If there is a deficit of eyelid-closure (lagophthalmus) with acute complications and if there is no success by a systemic therapy, one can help the patients by transplantation of autolog skin grafts into the affected eyelids.
