Chalazion

A chalazion is a swelling caused by a blockage of a glandular duct of a „Meibom-gland“. Within one eyelid, one or more swellings can develop which can be quite painful, especially in the case of infections.

There is a different therapeutic approach in dependence of bigness and localisation. If there is a small chalazion, one can wait and do a regular hygiene of the edge of the eyelid by massaging the affected lid-area.

Many chalazion(s) degenerate spontaneously after some months.

Infections which mostly accompany a chalazion can be treated by local application of salve.

A chalazion which persists and bothers for a longer time can be removed surgically.

In cases which are resistant to therapy, a carcinoma of a „Meibom-gland“ should be ruled out. If there is a surgical treatment, it ought to include a histological analysis.
