Kissing Naevus

Nevus of the upper and the lower eyelid.

During the eyelid-closure the edges of the lids are in contact. According to this, the name „kissing nevus“ developed. It is a congenital and pigmented alteration of the eyelids.

Normally this nevus is benign, without significant growth. Nevertheless one should control this alteration regularly, because in these pigmented areas, malignant alterations can also develop.

If the entries of the tear-duct(s) are overgrown by pigmented cells, a stenosis can develop and thereby „dropping tears“(epiphora).

As long as this nevus does not bother the patient and does not grow significantly, it needs not to be removed, especially because of the difficult surgery near the area of the edge/angle of the eyelid(s).

If there are malfunctions or aesthetical problems, a reduction of the pigmented tissue can be aspired. At this, laser- or electric powered-ablation is actually preferred.
